Backup Problem on physical Windows 2012 R2 Domain Controllers

Posted by Sander on January 9, 2014

In my testlab I have build 1 physical domain controller with 6 physical identical disks. Each pair of disks were configured in a RAID 1 combination. After installing Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition and promoting the server to a Domain Controller I had issues configuring and running a full Windows Server Backup.

I have used the following configuration for the Operating System and Directory Service:

OS: RAID 1 (consisting of 2 identical physical disks)
Active Directory: RAID 1 (consisting of 2 identical physical disks)
Backup: RAID 1 (consisting of 2 identical physical disks)

The volume for the backups were dedicated for this purpose. After configuring a Full Backup and running a test the following error appeared:

“The backup operation that started at ‘‎2013‎-‎12‎-‎02T14:05:15.130000000Z’ has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code ‘0x80780119’. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.”

The cause of the problem was that the amount of MB’s for the Shadow Copy was too low…

In order to fix this I have executed the following steps:

  1. Start Server Manager and browse to File and Server Services\Servers
  2. Assign a drive letter to the Recovery Partition for example B
  3. Open Windows Explorer and select the B-drive and right click
  4. Select Configure Shadow Copies and select Settings of the B-drive
  5. image
  6. Change the B-drive in the Located on this volume to C:\
  7. Change the Use Limit from what you have to 500 MB and click OK
  8. Close all dialog boxes
  9. Remove the B-drive letter which you have assigned in Step 2

Start your Windows Server Backup and it should work.
